Study Claims Insecticide Sprays Are Ineffective Against Cockroaches

Consumer bug sprays offer “insignificant to zero value” in combatting German cockroach invasions, according to researchers.

A report has uncovered that the majority of consumer bug sprays are ineffective against German cockroaches, with more than 80% of these insects surviving exposure to common pyrethroid-based products. Researchers stress the importance of enhanced evaluation criteria and more efficient pest management tactics, including comprehensive pest control.

Lack of Effectiveness in Common Bug Sprays

A prevalent variety of consumer bug sprays is mainly ineffective and provides “insignificant to zero value” in eradicating cockroach infestations, as outlined in a recent study.

Persistent insecticides are formulated for application on surfaces where cockroaches are prone to emerge, subjecting them to the toxic substance when they cross the surface subsequently. Nonetheless, experimental analysis by experts at the University of Kentucky and Auburn University indicates that the residues have limited impact on German cockroaches (Blattella germanica), a primary species that infest residences and structures globally.

The investigation unveiled that fluid and aerosol sprays utilizing pyrethroid insecticides terminated less than 20 percent of German cockroaches exposed to sprayed surfaces for 30 minutes. Additionally, even when cockroaches were confined to the treated surfaces, most products required eight to 24 hours to eliminate the cockroaches, with some taking up to five days. Published today (August 14) in the Journal of Economic Entomology, the exploration scrutinized the sprays on German cockroaches harvested from real-world infestations, where the insects have developed immunity to pyrethroids, as documented in previous investigations.

    Obstacles in Cockroach Management

“In scenarios where individuals do not have access to efficacious professional pest control or consumer options, they continue to endure the consequences of an infestation, including the risks to health associated with cockroach allergens. The home should be a place where individuals can unwind and feel at ease,” remarked Johnalyn Gordon, Ph.D., the primary author of the study and a postdoctoral associate at the University of Florida.

Gordon conducted the study as a graduate research assistant at the University of Kentucky, working in the laboratory of Zach DeVries, Ph.D., an assistant professor of urban entomology and the senior author of the study. Their research was financially supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Controlling cockroaches, though demanding on occasions, is achievable, as per the researchers, yet it usually entails a substantial amount of time and costs in terms of applied products. A central issue is that German cockroaches are almost universally impervious to pyrethroids.

“Because of the frequent utilization of pyrethroid-based residual substances, it is highly probable that German cockroaches within households will exhibit some degree of pyrethroid resistance,” Gordon mentions. “To our understanding, a pyrethroid-susceptible German cockroach population hasn’t been sighted from field sources for decades.”

The Issue With Current Insecticide Evaluation

Nonetheless, the prevailing standards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency do not mandate insecticide items to be assessed on recently obtained cockroaches from the habitat or those evidencing insecticide resistance.

“Expectantly, investigations like this one might instigate alterations in product examination and assessment, so that the product descriptions adequately portray the extent of control these items can deliver,” Gordon indicates.

    Surface Variation and Cockroach Conduct

Further factors likely contribute to the unsatisfactory outcomes of the residual aerosol substances, such as surface diversity and cockroach demeanor. Gordon and partners evaluated the sprays on painted drywall, ceramic tile, and stainless steel and determined that their effectiveness was notably inferior on drywall. Even a group of cockroaches lacking pyrethroid resistance that was included in the research was barely impacted by the residual sprays on drywall. “This infers that the porosity of a surface might substantially influence product efficiency,” Gordon suggests. “Due to customary applications of residual pesticides along baseboards, the reduced effectiveness on painted drywall was a particularly striking discovery.”

Conversely, cockroaches are improbable to settle for prolonged periods on treated surfaces with insecticides, both due to their usual movement and their potential inclination to avoid them. A separate study in DeVries’ laboratory published the previous year disclosed that resistant German cockroaches will avoid remaining in contact with pyrethroid-treated surfaces for an extended duration if given a selection.

Collectively, these elements sketch a bleak scenario for cockroach management through insecticide sprays. “Based on our findings, pyrethroid-based do-it-yourself products are probably ineffective against German cockroaches indoors, particularly if employed as residual items,” Gordon asserts.

    Promising Alternatives to Aerosols

More encouraging do-it-yourself choices for cockroach control encompass gel or fluid baits, which allure roaches to a food source containing a slow-acting insecticide, Gordon explains. Ideally, consumers could also avail affordable professional pest-control services adopting a multipronged technique recognized as integrated pest management, or IPM. However, this is commonly not the scenario for occupants of low-income, multi-family residences, where cockroach infestations frequently endure tenaciously.

“There exists a wealth of insight and research on how we can manage cockroaches, but there are numerous financial and procedural hurdles impeding this control in these regions, arguably where it is most necessary,” Gordon notes. “Targeting enhanced technologies that can bridge these management gaps is truly pivotal in attaining accessible pest control, be it through diverse active components and action modalities, compositions, or product deployment tactics.”
